Spider and varicose veins can be unsightly and painful. To treat these conditions Dr. Keel uses sclerotherapy, a minimally invasive medical procedure, to lessen or eliminate unsightly spider and uncomplicated varicose veins. The procedure entails a injection of a sclerosing solution – typically saline based – directly into the vein. The solution damages the lining of the blood vessel, causing collapse and – ultimately – a blood clot. The clot is then reabsorbed, eliminating the vein and its appliance.
Sclerotherapy is a safe, effective, minimally invasive medical procedure. There is little to no downtime associated with sclerotherapy. To maximize results, patients should wear compression stockings 24 hours per day, avoid high-impact activities, hot baths or saunas, and long plane rides for up to a week after the procedure. The treatment eliminates only abnormal veins that are not in use. Although significant improvement may be seen within days of treatment, maximum results are evident at approximately 2 months following treatment.
